Stahlo will secure “Green Steel” from Salzgitter as of 2025

Starting in 2021, Stahlo has been purchasing CO₂-reduced steel from Salzgitter Flachstahl and delivering it to emission-conscious customers. Now, the Steel Service Centre, a member of the Friedhelm Loh Group, has secured SALCOS steel from the end of 2025. Consequently, according to the Stahlo classification, customers will receive C+ and B+ emission class steels and be able to achieve their goal of further CO₂-optimisation of their steel purchasing for the years to come.

Dillenburg, 21. December 2022 – Since 2021, Stahlo has been supplying its customers with steel based on the socalled “Peine electric arc furnace (EAF) route” according to the Stahlo D+ classification, in other words, with a greatly reduced carbon footprint thanks to electric steel production. This represents a cut of over 60 per cent in emissions compared to the conventional blast furnace (BF) route. Furthermore, Stahlo has now concluded a partnering agreement with Salzgitter Flachstahl and has secured the availability of SALCOS® (Salzgitter low carbon steelmaking) material, from probably the end of 2025. In this way, one of Europe’s most modern steel service centres is ensuring the availability of steel in emission class C+ or B+ according to the Stahlo classification.

They have already planned and made valuable progress within their direct sphere of influence (Scope 1 + 2). However, upstream emissions are another major factor in footprint optimisation. Here, the upstream suppliers such as steel suppliers are responsible. In the future, Stahlo customers will be able to obtain CO₂-reduced SALCOS steel at all three plant sites – in Dillenburg, Gera and Nordhausen. With an ideal carbon footprint from less than 3,6 kg CO_2e per tonne of processed steel, the Steel Service Centre is supporting its customers in optimising the product carbon footprint (PCF) of the steel products purchased. Stahlo supplies companies in the Friedhelm Loh Group, such as Rittal and customers in the manufacturing and automotive industries with a sophisticated range of flat steels.

Moreover, Stahlo and Salzgitter Flachstahl are planning to complete the recycling chain. Stahlo could then deliver sorted, pure scrap directly back to Salzgitter Flachstahl and implement the socalled “closed loop.”
